Running from 6 May to 5 July, Hard, Fast and Beautiful offers a cultural reason to head into Porto’s historic centre, in a venue that has become one of the city’s most active addresses for film programming.

Curated by André Gil Mata, Cláudia Varejão, Guilherme Blanc and Nuno Crespo, the programme brings together films that look at sport beyond results and trophies. Across 10 sessions, it explores identity, discipline, inequality, spectacle and the emotional weight of athletic ambition, with titles including Offside, Belarmino, Tokyo Olympiad and Garrincha, Alegria do Povo.

For visitors staying in Porto, the location adds to the appeal. The Batalha is in Praça da Batalha, close to the city centre and within easy reach of some of Porto’s most visited streets and landmarks, making the cycle an easy add-on to an afternoon or evening downtown.

The programme also reinforces the Batalha’s role as a contemporary cultural stop in Porto, where cinema is not only shown but also framed as a way of reading the world. In that sense, this is a film series that speaks both to local audiences and to travellers looking for something more distinctive than a standard tourist itinerary.
