Rua do Bonjardim is back: Porto returns its third coolest street in the world to the city

Rua do Bonjardim has been handed back to the city. The project, signed by Porto City Hall, covered the stretch between Rua de Fernandes Tomás and Rua Formosa, ensuring coherence with nearby sections already rehabilitated, such as the segment between Rua de Guilherme da Costa Carvalho and Praça de D. João I. The works were divided between two municipal companies: GO Porto, responsible for the surface, and Águas e Energia do Porto, responsible for the underground networks.
Above ground, GO Porto oversaw the complete replacement of the pavement and a full reorganisation of public space, delivering wider pedestrian walkways, coexistence zones between pedestrians and vehicles, better-defined traffic lanes and new urban furniture. Traditional materials such as granite and limestone were used throughout, respecting the street's historic alignments and ensuring visual continuity with the surrounding area.
Below the surface, Águas e Energia do Porto replaced the water supply and wastewater networks in full, improving the capacity and efficiency of both systems, and renewed the stormwater drainage adjusted to the street's profile. Conceived as an integrated and phased intervention shared between municipal entities, the total contract value exceeds 750,000 euros.
The timing carries symbolic weight: in 2025, Rua do Bonjardim was named the third coolest street in the world, a recognition that underlined the vitality, diversity and appeal of an axis that now combines historical identity with contemporary renewal.
