FIMP’26 brings international puppetry to Porto and Matosinhos

Mercado Bolhão
Porto’s historic Bolhão Market became a stage for opera on Saturday, 24 October, as the FIATO International Festival of Arts and Opera organised a programme celebrating the art form ahead of World Opera Day, observed internationally on 25 October.
The initiative opened with FIATO – New Talents, a programme designed to showcase young performers and emerging voices. Students from the Porto Conservatory of Music performed at 10:30, followed by a presentation by Ginasiano at 12:30.
The afternoon programme invited the public to take part in a collective musical experience. The World Opera Day Flash Mob brought together people of different ages and levels of experience to perform two choruses. An open rehearsal began at 15:30, followed by a public presentation at 16:30.
By bringing opera into a traditional market, the initiative placed classical music in an everyday setting, connecting a performing art often associated with formal venues to one of the city’s busiest historic spaces.
The FIATO festival is set to continue in November, with further events scheduled across Porto from 13 to 21 November. The programme will include performances, experiences and training activities.
