The city has been selected as the new international home of one of the world's most prestigious offshore sailing competitions, strengthening its position on the global maritime stage. From 2028, Porto will welcome major sailing events, a new ocean museum and public activities, with three round-the-world race departures scheduled for 2030, 2034 and 2038.

Porto is set to become a major international centre for ocean sailing after being selected as the new global headquarters of The Ocean Race, one of the most demanding and recognised competitions in professional sailing. The landmark partnership, involving Porto City Council, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal, will run until 2040, establishing a permanent base for the organisation on Portugal's Atlantic coast.

The agreement represents a significant international recognition of Porto's maritime identity and its connection to the Atlantic. Founded in 1973, The Ocean Race has built a global reputation through its round-the-world competitions, in which professional sailing teams face some of the most challenging conditions at sea. Under the new partnership, Porto will become the starting port for three editions of the race, in 2030, 2034 and 2038, as well as hosting a special sailing event in 2028.

The project will also bring new attractions and activities to the city. An historic waterfront building opposite Porto City Park, on the seafront, will be transformed into the operational headquarters of The Ocean Race. Public and educational activities are expected to begin there in 2028, alongside the special sailing event. The partnership also includes plans for a new museum at another waterfront location, creating a permanent space dedicated to the ocean, the history of the competition and the sailors and teams that have shaped its legacy.

Beyond Porto, the partnership will extend across Portugal, with at least six additional international sailing events planned under The Ocean Race Europe over the next 13 years. The wider programme will also include international summits and initiatives focused on ocean science, education, sustainability and the blue economy, connecting coastal communities with the organisation's global network.

Ocean protection is another central element of the agreement. Through its Racing for the Ocean programme, The Ocean Race works with scientists, educators, governments, businesses and international organisations to improve understanding of marine environments and encourage action to protect ocean health. Establishing its headquarters in Porto will provide a long-term base for expanding these activities and bringing the international ocean community closer to the city.

An early milestone will take place on 19 November 2026, when Porto hosts The Ocean Race Summit, bringing together international voices to discuss the future health of the oceans. With the new headquarters and public activities planned from 2028, followed by the first round-the-world race departure in 2030, the partnership marks a new chapter in Porto's relationship with the Atlantic and its growing international presence in sport, science and maritime innovation.
