Livraria Lello to close temporarily this spring for preservation works

Livraria Lello
Livraria Lello has announced a temporary closure, expected to last approximately one week between April and May 2026. The shutdown will allow for deep maintenance works on the historic building and the continuation of the expansion works next door, which include a new cultural space designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
The closure comes weeks after the bookshop was officially reclassified as a National Monument by the Portuguese government, a milestone announced on 13 January, the date of Lello's 120th anniversary. The new designation, according to the bookshop's own statement, makes investing in the building's preservation "even more imperative."
The exact dates will be confirmed closer to the time. Visitors planning a trip to Porto this spring are advised to check the bookshop's official website before travelling.
