Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, celebrates its 120th anniversary on January 13th with free entry and special gifts for visitors. Founded in 1906 by brothers José and António Lello, this cultural icon of Porto will exceptionally open its doors to the public at 1:00 PM with no admission charge, and will offer a special commemorative edition book to the first 120 visitors.
Located on Rua das Carmelitas in Porto's historic center, Livraria Lello is internationally recognized as one of the world's most beautiful bookstores. The bookstore captivates visitors with its stunning Neo-Gothic architecture, featuring an iconic red wooden staircase that appears to float, intricate carved wood details, and a magnificent stained-glass ceiling that bathes the interior in colorful light. Beyond its architectural splendor, Lello represents over a century of literary tradition and cultural heritage, making it an essential stop for anyone visiting Porto.
The 120th anniversary celebration promises more than just free entry, with additional surprises and announcements to be revealed during the day. The bookstore has major projects underway, including Babell (Porto's new literary festival) and an expansion designed by renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira that will add a physical ticket office and more space for books and cultural events.
Visitor Information
Typically, entrance to Livraria Lello costs €10 per adult, which is fully deductible when purchasing books inside. However, on January 13th, the symbolic ticket system is waived entirely to celebrate this milestone with the public. The bookstore normally welcomes around 4,000 visitors daily, testament to its status as one of Porto's most beloved landmarks.
