The Champions League Is Back in Porto
The Champions League returned to the Estádio do Dragão, but FC Porto began their European campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, as Erling Haaland proved decisive with two second-half goals.
On a rainy night in Porto, the Dragons faced a City side that controlled much of the first half through possession and pressure. Diogo Costa was called into action several times, denying Haaland, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki to keep Porto level at the break. The home side struggled to create clear chances but remained competitive in a physical and demanding opening 45 minutes.

Porto tried to be more aggressive after the interval, but the breakthrough came almost immediately at the other end. Two minutes into the second half, Enzo Fernández found Haaland with a perfectly weighted cross and the Norwegian headed past Diogo Costa to give City the lead. Porto then pushed higher and the game opened up, looking for a response, while defence continued to compete against City's considerable attacking quality.

The Dragons had moments in the second half, but City were able to manage the game and limit Porto's opportunities in the final third. With the match entering stoppage time, Haaland struck again, finishing from close range after a strong run and pass from Rayan Aït-Nouri to secure the three points for the visitors.
Erling Haaland once again showed why he is one of the most feared finishers in world football. Closely watched and constantly under pressure from Porto’s defence, the Norwegian needed very little to make his presence count, taking his limited opportunities with remarkable composure and precision. His two goals reflected that ruthless efficiency: when the chances came, Haaland stayed calm, made the right decisions and punished Porto with the clinical finishing that ultimately decided the match.

Before City eventually found the breakthrough, Diogo Costa kept Porto in the game with a series of outstanding saves. The goalkeeper was particularly important during Manchester City’s strongest spell in the first half, denying Haaland and other dangerous efforts with excellent reactions and positioning. His performance gave Porto a chance to reach half-time level and remained one of the standout individual displays of the night.

The 2-0 scoreline reflects City's superiority in possession and chances, with the visitors finishing with 64% possession and ten shots on target, compared with none for Porto. At the same time, there were positive aspects for the Dragons in their return to the competition, particularly the willingness to compete against one of Europe's strongest sides and the periods in which Porto managed to disrupt City's control.
After two seasons away, the Champions League is once again being played at the Dragão, and this opening match provided a demanding reminder of the level required. Manchester City leave Porto with the points, largely thanks to Haaland's finishing, while the Dragons now turn their attention to the next European challenge.
