Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia have officially conquered the title of 

, becoming the first pair of Portuguese cities to receive this distinction from the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe). This nomination comes after a joint candidacy from both cities for 2027, which resulted in a defeat by a minimal margin against Buenos Aires' candidacy.

The path to this achievement was peculiar. The two cities initially presented a joint candidacy for World Capital of Sport 2027, but lost the title to Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, due to the "high quality of the work presented" and the minimal difference in the final evaluation, ACES Europe decided to directly award the Portuguese cities the 2028 title. This decision is permitted by ACES regulations, which "allows the designation of the finalist city in the following year if the scoring difference is less than five points". The candidacy was formalized at the end of 2024 under the motto "

The distinction represents the "recognition of the joint effort of both municipalities, the community, clubs, athletes, associations and institutions that, over the years, have contributed to affirming sport as an essential pillar of life in the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia". The municipalities also highlight "the profound sense of responsibility that this nomination entails" for both cities. This is a historic opportunity that marks a new chapter in the history of Portuguese sport.

With this title, both municipalities assume the commitment to, over the coming years, "increasingly encourage and support formal, informal and federated sports practice". The plans include creating new equipment, requalifying existing sports spaces, developing new sports programs and organizing events with the aim of reinforcing the position of both cities as global sports destinations. The joint candidacy is governed by three fundamental vectors: excellence, inclusion and innovation.

For residents of both cities, this distinction promises concrete transformations in the local sports offering. The nomination represents a unique opportunity to expand sports infrastructure and create new programs that benefit the entire population. The title also positions Porto and Gaia as global sports destinations, opening doors for organizing major sporting events and increasing the international visibility of these two cities united by the Douro River.

Taking place in the city of Porto, between July 29th and August 4th, is the Eupago Porto Open, the city's international tennis competition, included in the ITF and ATP Challenger Tour, and held at the Monte Aventino Sports Complex. The event is organized by the Porto Tennis Association, in partnership with the Portuguese Tennis Federation.

The tournament runs until this sunday, with several portuguese players in action, both in singles and doubles categories, with emphasis on young players such as Jaime Faria and Henrique Rocha, 5th and 7th seeds, respectively. The tournament lineup also features a portuguese refereeing team.

The construction of the CAR is planned in three phases:

 Construction will include five football fields, accommodations featuring 46 suites plus two master suites, a spa, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy areas, locker rooms, administrative and financial management offices, a 56-seat auditorium, leisure spaces, dining rooms, a kitchen, and staff rooms.

Pereira mentioned that the center is expected to be fully operational by December 2026, an ambitious but achievable deadline. The acquisition cost for the roughly 19 hectares designated for the CAR, plus an additional 12 hectares of natural spaces, totals 3.85 million euros. The estimated costs for the first two construction phases range from 18 to 23 million euros, with the third phase coming in at about 8 million euros.

"This is a significant investment that will create substantial value," Pereira asserted. "If we can generate an additional 120 to 180 million euros over six years, this CAR could pay for itself in two or three years. The calculations are not that straightforward, but once operational at full capacity, the infrastructure’s potential for monetization is immense."

Pereira also assured that there is no shortage of foreign investors interested in financing the project, emphasizing the project’s potential for value creation and the ease of finding financial partners for well-conceived projects. This CAR represents a strategic development that could set a new standard in sports facilities for FC Porto, aligning with Villas-Boas's vision for the future of the club.

I made it a condition for my candidacy that the academy would begin. Three conditions were set: reaching the Champions League Round of 16, moving out of negative equity, and starting the academy. Thus, this academy is both a long-held dream and a four-year promise," he added in response.

"Before I make further remarks, I want to highlight two individuals. First, architect Manuel Salgado, who has dedicated himself to this project not only professionally but with heart, as we are in the most beautiful stadium in Portugal, his creation, which he strongly identified with, making it even more a part of the dragon spirit. The second is Mr. Gaspar Borges. I've known him for decades. I have always had the utmost respect and best impression of him. When we needed someone to collaborate with us, he was fully committed, heart and soul, to drive this forward. His dedication was exceptional, his vision brought us to a successful outcome. Up until about three weeks ago, give or take, we always discussed things verbally, as men of their word do.
